How to measure brand awareness without guessing

Awareness campaigns have a reputation for being hard to measure. They are harder than sales campaigns, but not unmeasurable. These are the numbers we use, from simplest to most rigorous.

Reach and frequency

Start with how many unique people saw the campaign and how often. Too little frequency and people forget you. Too much and you waste budget and annoy them. For most video campaigns, two to four views per person over a few weeks is a sensible range.

Attention

Video completion rate and average watch time show whether people actually watched. A cheap impression that is skipped in a second does little for your brand.

When awareness rises, more people search for your brand by name. Track branded search volume in Google Search Console, Google Ads and Google Trends, and compare the campaign period with the weeks before it and with regions where the campaign did not run.

Brand lift studies

Google and Meta can run brand lift studies that compare people who saw your ads with a similar group who did not, then ask both groups about ad recall and brand awareness. This is the most direct measure of what the campaign changed.

Direct and organic traffic

Direct visits to your website and organic app installs often rise after a strong awareness push. On their own they are noisy, but alongside branded search they confirm the trend.

Put it together

No single number proves an awareness campaign worked. A rise in reach, completion, branded search and brand lift together does. We set targets for each before the campaign starts, so the report answers a clear question at the end.
